arlington graves

I’m not sure it is possible to take the confusion and horror of war, the death and destruction that goes with it, and impose order on it. That’s what seems to be the goal at the Arlington National Cemetary though. Nice neat lines, no matter what direction you look.

A far cry from the realities of war. This is a cemetary for soldiers and (in some cases) their wives and kids. Everyone who visits a grave was touched by war, and many veterans come here. Soldiers work here, ritualistically guarding the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Do these soldiers and veterans find it comforting, I wonder? Or does it seem as much an illusion to them, with their actual experience and terrifying memories, as it did to me, someone morally opposed to war?
